The Ultimate Super Bakso!
by Adi WP (5-Dec-2004) | Readers Say

During the festive period of Hari Raya, my family and I went to visit a relative in Bintaro Banten, an area located in western Jakarta. After seeking forgiveness from each other for mistakes we had done in the past, we ate ketupat and Lebaran cookies like there was no tomorrow.

Unfortunately, almost every family I visited offered the same sort of things to eat on their menu, making my palates crave for something different to savor. While I was driving to our next destination, my siblings sat with their noses flat and plastered on the windows, looking out for an attractive food stall at which we could stop by to eat.

And there it was, Warung Bakso Jarot.

The bakso stall was small and narrow, and the crowd there was swelling at an exponential rate. At first I was doubtful that this was the right place to go eat and started to voice out my opinion. But when I saw the irritated glares on my siblings' faces and how one of them had started to roll up her sleeves like she was ready to go wrestling, I realized that my very mortality was at stake. I thought better of trying to go against the grain of hungry people and gave in.

We miraculously managed to find an empty table and sat ourselves down. Right on cue, the Abang approached our table and with a toothy grin he rattled off the menu:

  • Bakso Urat (regular size meatballs filled with chopped meat)
  • Bakso Telor (regular size meatballs filled with boiled egg)
  • Bakso Super (extra size meatballs also filled with chopped meat)

Each bakso dish was affordably priced at Rp.6000. If you get greedy for more bakso, you can mix and match two kinds of bakso dish, .e.g. bakso urat + bakso telor. This bigger portion will of course cost more, Rp.7500.

We finally decided to get the Bakso Urat and Bakso Super without noodles.

My sister, who was already tempted to tears, urged the Abang to quickly prepare our giant meal. The tantalizing aroma of steaming bakso was making us drool like crazy. Oh bang, cepatan donk bang? Lapar nih!

The adroit Bang Jarot made the dish which was ready to be enjoyed few minutes later. Here is the magnificent noodle-less Bakso Urat and Super that I ordered.

Look at the giant size of this Bakso Super! It's definitely much bigger than the Bakso Bola Tennis that Fairy had written about before. I have on many occasions eaten the Bakso Bola Tennis at Blok S, however nothing quite matches up to Bang Jarot's bakso! Look at that thing, it is humangous!

If I were ever hired as Bang Jarot's advertising campaign manager, I would so give the business this tag line: "Baksonya Pria."

(Hey, to us men, size is everything, baby.)

Here's another look at our favorite Bakso.

I took a sip of the bakso broth and wow, it bowled me over, man! It does not get any better than this, I swear to you. My family members were already wearing big smiles of satisfaction and slurping the bakso soup noisily, a sure sign of compliments to the chef. A blanket of silence suddenly draped our table as we concentrated heavily on finishing up our tasty baksos.

But you know how it is; a woman's stomach is always smaller than her purse, so my sisters didn't have a chance to finish up their giant portions of meatball and soup. But us men, yeah, our tummies hold more capacity than the trunks of our cars, so finishing up our orders was a snitch. Heck, we even helped our sisters clean the table of leftovers.

Remember, it is a sin to waste food. Hehe.

And what's a meal in Indonesia without teh botol to wash it all down, eh? "Apapun makanannya, minumnya Teh Botol Sosro." I tipped down 2 bottles easy.

My sister is always fascinated with my big appetite and how I ate much more than she. An unsolved mystery in our family is how I can eat so much but still maintain my begeng bin ceking (skinny) physical state. I don't know if it is a blessing or a curse :P

Althought the warung was not terribly clean, we honestly and truly enjoyed Bang Jarot's bakso. Not only is it delicious, but it's fairly priced too. I would suggest that you not use too much food seasoning since the broth is already flavorful from the bakso. Too much seasoning isn't very good for one's health anyway.

With bulging stomachs, we left Bang Jarot's and continued our journey to our next intended house. There, we were once again served ketupat and its related condiments. We couldn't say no and wanted to politely refuse. But then the bottomless pit monsters in us took over, and there we were, eating again once more.

#34. Fai, you should try the 'torpedo' satay (or is it bakso? Or soto?). The main ingredient is a goat/sheep's 'torpedo' and its two 'cannonballs' (surely I don't need to elaborate it? ))

I heard about it all the time when I was in high school but never actually tried it. Ada di Jakarta lah somewhere ... (kayaknya).

Sekarang aku tinggal di Bandung kok jadi pengen ya??? Ha ha ha... Nantilah kalau ke Jakarta lagi.

#25. Next year I hope to visit Indonesia after 56 years. I'm living in Holland from 1949 and I've been returned yet. So my cousin and his wife invited me to come and visit Indonesia.
Of course we hope to see and find back my grand-parents house, my parents house in Bandung and my place of birth Blitar. Of course I hope to be able to eat there Bakso, because that's my favorite meal when I was a kid. I think you can eat it everywhere in Indonesia?
We've booked for the journey through Indonesia and Bali from 31-3-2006 till 22-4-2006.
Please tell me where you can eat the best the Bakso, in Jakarta,Bandung,Blit ar,Malang,Soerabaya or other places?
Thanks in forward.
bye,bye see you next year in Indonesia

#24. The Meatballs
1 kilo of very fine minced meat (preferably beef)
2 eggs
300 grams of tapioca-flour
4-8 cloves of garlic
1 red onion
1 teaspoon of white pepper
2 teaspoons of salt

Mix garlic, red onion, salt, and white pepper in a mortar or mixer. Mix the spice-mixture with the eggs, the tapioca-flour and the minced meat. Use your fingers, add a cup of water, and keep on working until the mixture feels soft and smooth.

Boil some water in a rather large pot, at least about 2 liters. Start rolling the mixture into small meatballs. Lower the meatballs into the boiling water. When they float up to the surface they are ready.

The Soup
1 liter chicken bouillon
3-7 cloves of garlic
1 red onion
salt and pepper

Fry the finely chopped red onion together with the garlic and add salt and pepper. Stir down the mixture into 1 liter of chicken bouillon and add a cup of water. Heat the soup until it boils and then put in the meatballs. Let it simmer for a minute or two before you serve your bakso.

Bakso is normally served with noodles. To spice it up you can use chili sauce, soyasauce, tomato ketchup, Chinese chive. It is your bakso, so you can, and should, do whatever you want to in order to make it taste good.

#22. Well well, bakso is accumulated of sometimes not reccomended, chemical matters on the MSGs, kecaps, (not so pure) chilli-tomato sauce and even contribute to some overweight condition with their unsaturated derived from red meat fat and sometimes, offals. I don't know if some peoples still have their thin and skinny body, even after consuming tons of bakso soup in their life. Or maybe, we Indonesians just too immune with the dumped poisonus stuff in our cavities - just like one old wiseman say, "things that cannot kill you just make you go strength"
- Dr. Dadang -
Pal, have you ever tasting comro ?
