Wanna start an Indonesian Concert Photography collection?
by Farah 'Fairy' Mahdzan (7-Dec-2002) | Readers Say

If you like concert photography and admire some of Indonesia's biggest bands, then two items will be collectibles that you will treasure a lifetime. The photos that I've seen encased in two handsome A Mild Live Production publications do more than just say a thousand words: they literally scream about a million expressions of the energetic moments in which they were captured. Let's check them out!

2002 Diary: Rhythm of the Year

This silver-covered, black-ring-binded diary showcases photographs of artists such as The Fly, Project Pop, Slank, Sheila on 7, Chrisye, Naif, (extinct) Ada Band, Ari Lasso, /rif, Boomerang, Jikustik and Padi. The Rhythm of the Year 2002 diary is printed on cardboard-like paper giving it an overall solid physique thus prolonging the pages' mint condition since they will not be susceptible to doggy-eared tendencies like normal paper, especially if you're one of those people who will heavily flip through the pages. And who can blame you if you do, the photographs in the diary are professionally taken with good taste, you'll want to view them endlessly. If you happen to like a particular artist in the diary, lagilah you can't stop looking, hehe...

Apart from being able to jot down your daily schedules and reminders in the diary, on the left-bottom corner of every other page are short trivia of music history such as when the first piano was made, what the term "psychedelia" means, how acid jazz evolved, what moshing in a concert is and why Slank is considered the most important rock band in Indonesia (the answer). An educational and entertaining calendar organizer you say? You bet.

Love, Loud, Legendary Concert book

A Mild Live Production is an Indonesian business establishment well known for organizing some of the biggest names in concerts, international as well as local. From March to May in 2001 three concerts entitled "Love, Loud, Legendary Concert" were held as a series of tour all over the country, from Sulawesi to Java, from Kalimantan to Sumatra. The popular artists who performed in these concerts were picked based on the themes that they consistently portray in their music. Padi and Sheila on 7 performed in the "Love" concert because love songs are what they do best; rock bands /rif and Boomerang were appropriately chosen to perform in the "Loud" concert, and Chrisye, Indonesia's most successful male soloist with more than 20 years of experience in his music career, represented the "Legendary" concert.

This cool 30-page book of photographs serves up a scrumptious visual meal for Indonesian music lovers, whether they attended one of the concerts and would like something to remember the event by, or missed the concert but would like to have something unique and memorable of the concert to own. The gorgeous pictures of the bands in concert-action and the other creatively-taken compositions printed on glossy paper in this book are not to be missed by anyone who is a fan of any of the mentioned artists.

About the Photographers

The photos featured in the abovementioned diary and concert book were all taken by Paul Kadarisman and Revaldi of Selenium who are both well known for their high-quality and tasteful music photography. They've also been accredited for taking pictures for music album covers, one of the most recent being the carousel-horse album cover for pop-rock Bandung band Caffeine's 2nd album, Yang Tak Terlupakan (2002). You can also find Paul Kadarisman's photography work in Bunglon's Biru (1999) album sleeve.
